Alex week 4

week 4: passage picker

Passage 1: Tommy worked hard in the field for several days now but not telling Mr Mcdew or his own dad and fitzgibbon about the remarkable acts that tom did snag one of the Americans troops horses and claim it as his own, I chosed  this passage because it was remarkable that tom could accomplish this by his self.

Passage 2: When captain James fitzgibbon requested a surrender to warn about the incoming native soldiers, they were all shocked when fitzgibbon told colonel boerstler what might the natives have such a great power "easy to control but hard to keep back against the Fort wall" this passage reminded me about what power people have when joining together they become amazing strong.

they were fighting in a big war were they were outnumbered by a lot of men
but fitizgibbon new how to get out of it by tricking them but after they tricked them the americans were cepered and a  lot of them so the americans slowly brought there pickets back and then finally they blew up there fort the wat was over.
Bully boys lit circles

1.pg224 paragraph 4.Text to self: Tom turned down FitzGibbon’s invitation to become a bully boy despite longing for adventure instead to become a farmer, I can connect to this because if I was offered to join the military I would probably turn down the offer as well. This helps me understand how Tom is feeling and why he might be feeling like that.

2.pg185 paragraph 2.text to media: FitzGibbon mentions that the battle is to take place at beaver dams, I can connect this because in history i’ve heard of beaverdams and about Laura Secord making the trek to inform FitzGibbon. This helps me understand the history of Laura Secord and the battle of beaver dams as the book goes farther into detail about it.

3.pg206 paragraph 5.text to world: Tom tricked the american colonel and also intimidates him, I can connect this because many people deceive and threaten others to get what they want. This helps me understand how Tom might have thought of saying what he said and also the uncertainty the colonel felt.

My questions for chapter 17-21

Why did the Americans try to attack the DeCews’ Farm?

What would have happened to the Canadians if FitzGibbon had not sent out pickets and Captain Ducharme had not sent out Caughnawagas?

How would the story would have changed if Thomas had gone back to the farm?

How would have the battle been different if FitzGibbon had not done that trick?

How would have the battle changed if Colonel Boerstler had not surrendered?

How much longer do you think the battle would have been if the Americans had not surrendered?

Why do you think Colonel Boerstler believed that the Canadians had as much men as they said they had?

Where might have the battle taken place if the Americans had taken a different route?

Would the battle have been different if Thomas hadn’t said what he did?

Why did Thomas feel so bad for Chapin?

How would the story have been different if the riders were a big force of americans instead of red coats?

Why did the Americans burn the fort?

Week 3 summarizer

This bunch of chapters is focused mainly on the horror and truth of war. In this chapter Tom departs from his family’s farm after staying with them for a few days with FitzGibbon to find his father as he had promised his little brother, they travel alongside captain Ducharme and his native warriors. When they reach the first possible military hospital Tom’s father might be in where FitzGibbon warns him that the worst place in a war is a hospital. they search the tent where Tom is met with many horrors foreign to him, and an old neighbour who has had his arm amputated, when they are about to give up they decide to search the nearby barn when out of nowhere Tom’s father appears. After that when FitzGibbon is reporting in with his superiors Tom spends some time with his father during which his father pushes himself too hard and he collapses and Tom realises how his father’s life has changed. later when Tom and FitzGibbon are traveling together they are ambushed by 3 american soldiers during the chaos FitzGibbon is shot but he survives unhurt and Tom fights of the americans. The chapter ends with FitzGibbon and Tom riding back to camp.

My passages for chapter 11-17

pg.138 paragraph 1

“ ‘Pa!’ I screamed as I ran to him. I threw my arms around my father and tried to stop myself from breaking into tears. I knew they weren’t far away.” I chose this passage because it shows how much Thomas missed his father.

pg.131 paragraph 2

“Within two steps I was hit by a wave of foul-smelling air. It was different from anything I’d encountered before. There was a sweet, sickening odour, almost like alcohol, but underneath that was a more powerful smell----like rotting meat.” This passage describes how nasty a field hospital smelled in the 19th century.

pg.125 paragraph 6

“ ‘Natives are able to just fade into the forest,’ FitzGibbon explained. ‘Hundreds of men can be only dozens of feet away but invisible … until they want to be seen.’ ” This passage describes how devious the natives were and why the natives were a good ally in the war of 1812.

pg.147 paragraph 3 and 4

“ ‘AND THEN I’m planning on deserting and joining the American forces’ ”

“ ‘What did you say?’ I exclaimed, turning in my saddle to face FitzGibbon.” These passages show how easy it can be to get someone’s attention when they aren’t paying attention

I can connect to Tommey when he was at his homestead and had to stay a night or two more. And he was worried about Fitzgibbon getting hurt or dying because one time my Dad went moose hunting up north and was two days late. we thought something bad happened, see Mr. G I can be cuddly and fuzzy on the inside. this is a text to self connection.

Text to text, During history this year i've heard of this Tachuk guy, I think hey Mr. G history did something good

Text to self page 135 I can connect to this because i've said something mean or embarrassing to one of my friends and the person I was talking about was right there and heard us and was like "what!?"

standing in the open their arms in the air with a ring of militia and red coats standing guard muskets at the ready I thought this was important because it was interesting.

page 103 2nd paragraph

but surely all those supplies can't be for us she explained once she had a look at all the provisions.  You can use what your family requires and offer some to others you know who might be in need.  I think this was a good passage to pick because it goes to show how grateful everyone was back then

Start of Chapter 9,  1st paragraph

Ma! I screamed at the top of my lungs. As I spurred my horse to race towards her, she dropped the basket she was holding and ran to me.  I thought this was a good passage because it was deep.

My Connections for chapter 6-11

First Connection (Text to Self)
In the text Thomas says he knows the caves where they hide in and that he explored them when he was younger. I can relate to that because when I go camping with my family we a lot of the time we’ll bring my bike with us and I’ll spend the majority of the weekend riding around the campground learning the trails. I remember them so well I know where they lead just like Thomas know where the caves lead to. This helps me knows how it feels to know a system of trails/caves.

Second Connection (Text to Media)
When I read this book it reminds me of Assassin’s Creed Rogue. It reminds of Assassin’s Creed Rogue and in the game you can rob supply depots and take the supplies from them to upgrade your ship and other buildings. In the book the Canadians robbed a blockhouse and take most of the supplies. It also reminds me of the scenery in the game too. This connection helps me visualize what it looks like and what it’s like to rob a supply depot.

Third Connection (Text to World)
In this book when Thomas saw the dead body he wondered what the guy’s family would react when they found out that he was dead and what they would do. In the world when people die in a war his/her fellow soldiers also wonder what is going to his/her family reaction going to be and what they were going to do about it. This connection helps me visualize what he was thinking.

Fourth Connection (Text to Self?)
In the book Thomas also hoped if his father was ok. This reminds me of my grandpa, his brothers, sisters (the ones who were born before 1945) and his mother because his father went to join the war effort in WWII and they probably worried everyday waiting for news that he was ok and would come home safe. This connection helps me form an opinion on what it would be like to hope that your father was ok.

Week 1: connectors

The bully boys passage picker

pg8 4th paragraph . “The other soldier turned his head in alarm. I saw his eyes widen in shock and I hesitated for a split second before i brought the axe handle down. He turned slightly out of the way and the handle struck the side of his head, glancing down and hitting his shoulder with a sickening thud”. I chose this passage as that is the turning point in Tom’s life going from life of a farmer to that of adventure and danger.

 2. pg27 2nd paragraph “You weren’t the only one wondering what i was doing out there yelling and screaming for them to follow us did you think I had taken leave of my senses?  “No! I just...just…” Don’t worry lad my actions were meant to be confusing”. I chose this passage as it shows how cunning and strategic FitzGibbon is.

3. pg70 1st paragraph “The darkness was split by the explosion of a gunshot, and a second, and a third, and a volley of muskets! In shock i looked first at Mr. McCann and then at the gate to the blockhouse. More shots rang out and a man fell to the ground! I chose this passage because it is the last one that we read and it leaves the story on such a cliffhanger.

Summary of Chapter 1-6

VThese few chapters are about a boy who finds a way to help his country even though he’s too young to fight. The story starts out with a boy by the name of Thomas who goes his local general store when two americans soldiers come in and start robbing the store. All of a sudden a man by the name of FitzGibbon bursts in and stops the americans from robbing the store with the help of Thomas. FitzGibbon takes Thomas to his encampment which leads to him coming with his band of soldiers and Merritt’s militia to take out a supply depot because Thomas knows the area. Well they are traveling to the supply depot they run into an american militia detachment. FitzGibbon tricks the militia in believing that they have 500 troops which makes them retreat. When they get to the supply depot FitzGibbon and Merritt tricks their way into the supply depot. When they go into the depot the men waited outside hear gunshots. All and all in a war you can always find ways to help just like Thomas did by helping the militia find the supply depot.
